Tim Tebow's Good News

The Washington Post's On Faith blog recently invited Focus on the Family's Esther Fleece to weigh-in on Tim Tebow mania. I'm delighted to share her excellent piece with you:TebowSIv1.jpg

Tim Tebow’s good news

By Esther Fleece

No, God is not a Denver Broncos fan – certainly not in the sense of the people who paint their faces half orange and half blue and cheer on the home team at Sports Authority Field at Mile High. So Sunday’s exciting-as-it-was-unlikely playoff win over the defending AFC champion Pittsburgh Steelers was not, in any way that would suggest the creator of the universe picks sides in a football game, an “act of divine intervention.”

But that doesn’t mean His name wasn’t glorified in the Broncos’ 29-23 victory led by quarterback Tim Tebow, whose unconventional playing style and uncompromising expressions of his Christian faith have made him one of the NFL’s top stories this season.

I’ve been to plenty of football games – some of my dearest friends in the world are the families of former Detroit Lion and Bronco Luther Elliss and former Bronco and Atlanta Falcon Jason Elam – but I’ve never experienced anything like I did Sunday. Yes, the action on the field was thrilling – but it is the discussions in the stands I’ll remember, which will have real impact long after the details of yet another “Tebow Time” comeback have faded.

As an evangelical Christian, like Tebow, I am called to share my faith with others – that’s why we call it the “good news.” Sometimes, that can be a daunting responsibility – the Bible tells us that the way of Jesus can be offensive to those who don’t know Him. But there was an openness to hearing the Gospel all around me and my friends Sunday, as complete strangers asked us, in the midst of the game’s tensest moments, if we “pray like Tebow does” when circumstances turn challenging. (This is as good a place as any to point out that Tebow is hardly the only, or even the most outspoken, follower of Christ in pro football. Devout Christians suit up every weekend for every team in the NFL.)

TebowSIv2.jpgTim Tebow himself, as humble as he is, would likely be the first person to reject what I’m about to say, but as a Christian football fan living in Colorado, I can’t help but think that the “platform” God has given him – for which he always expresses thanks in interviews – makes him a little like John the Baptist. In the Bible, John the Baptist comes to prepare the people of Judea for Jesus’ arrival, as “a witness to testify concerning the light, so that through him all might believe. He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light.” (John 1:7-8). In other words, Tim Tebow isn’t the Messiah (it’s actually quite sacrilegious to even joke that he is), but he takes every opportunity presented him to point people to the Messiah.

Anecdotes of how Tebow has done this could cover a football field. A caller to a Denver talk show several weeks back said he was at the Broncos-Bears game on Dec. 11, and when it appeared there was no way the team could win he turned to his friend and said, “If we pull this out, I’m going to church.” The team did pull it out, in overtime, and he told the radio host was going to keep his end of the bargain and attend a worship service.

After the win over the Steelers, the social media world began lighting up with the fact that Tebow had thrown for 316 yards – as in John 3:16. A friend posted this fact on his Facebook page, not to prove that God roots for Denver, but in the hope that some of his friends who did not know Jesus might look the verse up and learn more about God’s goodness and plan for salvation. Sure enough, one of his friends did just that. And John 3:16, like it did when Tebow scribbled it into his eyeblack during his days at the University of Florida, became one of the Internet’s top search terms again.

Now it’s on to New England for the Broncos, where they’ll take on the Patriots in another game the “experts” are giving them little chance of winning. That means another week of Tebow talk, some from him, mostly about him, with additional opportunities for every day believers to plant seeds of the Gospel and no shortage of opinions about whether he’s right or wrong to be “mixing religion with football.”Lombardi1.jpg

Interestingly, that discussion will happen as Tebow leads his team in pursuit of the Vince Lombardi Trophy, the NFL’s highest honor, named for the legendary Green Bay Packers coach who said this in a May 1964 speech to the First Friday Club of Los Angeles:

“When we place our dependence in God, we are unencumbered, and we have no worry. In fact, we may even be reckless, insofar as our part in the production is concerned. This confidence, this sureness of action, is both contagious and an aid to the perfect action.

“The rest is in the hands of God -- and this is the same God, gentlemen, who has won all of His battles up to now.”

And those are the eternal victories Tim Tebow understands matter more than anything that happens on a football field.

Nice article!  I enjoyed the message very much.
Jan 12, 2012 9:53 PM Guest Tami  says:
Excellent!  As I posted on my Facebook wall after Sunday's Bronco win:   Denver might not be "my" team nor do I say this is God's team simply because their quarterback testifies to Jesus Christ, but I cannot help but cheer for this quarterback and his team because of Tebow's testimony to Jesus Christ! Go Tebow. Make His glory known!
Jan 13, 2012 5:39 AM Guest Jim  says:

I am fascinated to see how God is working in Tim Tebow's life.  I have a young son, who likes football, and Tebow is a good role model.  I do pray that Tebow is protected against becoming prideful or any of those things that take down other athletes.

Here is what I find interesting.  Tebow keeps winnning but his production numbers aren't that good.  Football pundits before the draft said he was better suited to be a tight end than a quarterback.  Perhaps God is keeping Tebow humble by not allowing him to have great statistics but still does allow him to win?  Something worth considering.

In any case, praise to God for the way he is using Tebow!

Thanks for running the John 3:16 ad during the Broncos/Patriots game.  My husband is not a believer, but he was so taken by those precious kids that he became emotional watching it.  Thanks for reaching out in such a warm, compassionate way.  : )

We just watched your John 3:16 add with the little children!!! Treasure in heaven. God must be so pleased. Dare to be different. God bless you. Thank you so much for blessing us.
Jan 14, 2012 8:20 PM Guest Brian  says:
If God desserves some of the praise for the Bronco's win last week, now that Tebow and the Broncos are getting pummeled by the Godless Patriots, does God share some of the blame?  How does that work exactly?  Just in general, if a really bad thing happens to a really devoted evangelical Christian...well, how does it happen?  God punishes evil and wicked, but he says repeatedly in the Bible that he will reward righteousness.  So how do terrible things ever happen to believers?
Jan 14, 2012 8:51 PM LauraFOTF LauraFOTF    says in response to Brian:

That’s a good question, Brian.  It’s fair to wonder about why bad things happen to people regardless of their belief or unbelief in God.  These two articles from our TroubledWith.com website may give you some food for thought. Also, if you’d like to delve deeper by talking one-on-one, please feel free to give us a call on Monday to speak with a chaplain.

Thank you - Focus on the Family for standing firm and funding a commerical in prime time football, the children were precious.  What a true blessing you are to a generation that needs to know the Lord.  Tebow has taken an opportunity to show the world what so many are in need of, even a football game can be a mission field.
Jan 14, 2012 10:07 PM Guest Leesa C  says:
I was so excited to see the commecial sponsored by Focus on the Family during the game. Thank you!!
Jan 14, 2012 10:36 PM Guest Jeannie  says:

Apart from God specifically leading someone to create that commercial, it could've been more effective.  It's football!!  Really, all you needed were cool sound effects, a black background, and white letters.  It seems like it was created to preach to the crowd.

Jan 15, 2012 5:10 AM Guest Karen  says:
GREAT commercial during the Pats/Broncos game.  Go Focus on the Family!
Jan 15, 2012 7:20 AM Guest john  says:
What a wonderful moment during a game that turned out to be a blowout!  What a humiliating loss for Tim Tebow and his teammates.  Yet, did you notice that at the end of the game, all cameras were on the losing quarterback.  He was mobbed by the media.  Tom Brady was left all alone to run off the field without any paparazzi!
Jan 15, 2012 7:20 AM Guest Nanci  says:
Thank you Focus on the Family for airing that commercial last night during the Pats/Broncos game.  My husband and I just made a donation to FOF to help you continue spreading the Word of God.  Last night's game was a wonderful forum to reach millions of tv viewers. Thanks to FOF and Tim Tebow, our children can now honor and idolize a true hero like Tim who spreads inspiration and encourages them to live a Godly life instead of watching other professional athletes who have no morals or values.  My husband was watching the game with our 3 sons last night.  I am so happy to know that this is what they saw and this commercial made an impact on them.  Amen and thank you!
Jan 15, 2012 11:26 AM Guest Monique  says:
My husband and I sat in amazement watching the commercial during the game last night....THANK YOU for the message of TRUTH......His Truth is the truth to save!

LOVED the John 3:16 spot with the children.  Well done and so many are talking about it today!
Jan 15, 2012 3:19 PM Guest Pat M.  says:
Thank you so very much for the article above and also for the commercial during the game. Hearing and seeing the children publically sharing John 3:16 was awesome! It was so exciting and inspiring and I know it will impact all age groups. I can't thank Focus on the Family enough for all you do in sharing the good news of Jesus Christ and also for supporting fellow believers such as Tim Tebow who are standing strong in their faith in Christ. To God be the glory!
Jan 15, 2012 3:24 PM Guest Kathleen  says:
About that commercial:  not sure how many people choose or change their religion based on what a group of 6-year-olds has been coached to say in front of a camera.  But maybe that's just me.
Jan 15, 2012 4:08 PM Guest Mary N.  says:
I loved the John 3:16 add on the air during the Denver Broncos and Patriot game. We differently need more of this type of  things put on  T.V to wake up Christian people and those who are not Christian yet, that God is alive and well and is working through more people then any of us are aware of. I am a die hard Dallas Cowboy fan and now I am a Tim Tebow fan.
Jan 15, 2012 4:16 PM Guest Mary G.  says:
Kudos on the John 3:16 ad.  Well done!  Keep up the good work.  God bless you.  I enjoy your magazine and Im sending you a small donation to help towards that ad!!
Jan 15, 2012 4:44 PM Guest Michael P.  says:
Thank you again Focus and CBS for teaming up to present God's word and John 3:16 during Saturday's Denver- New England football game.. with millions watching.  Just two years ago, Focus, CBS and Tebow (no coincidence) teamed up during the Super Bowl for a wonderful Pro-life message.  What a great team and message.. Can you do it again with John 3:16 on Super Bowl Sunday?
Jan 15, 2012 6:00 PM Guest linda  says in response to JoEllyn:
We LOVED the John 3:16 message during the football game!!!!! It was the best thing we have seen on TV for years!!! Wonderfully done! Thank you so much!
Jan 15, 2012 7:27 PM Guest Anita  says:
I don't really care for football, and I couldn't even of told you who was playing.  Your commercial however captured my attention.  Thank you for presenting the gospel so clearly, compassionately and professionally.
Jan 16, 2012 5:28 AM Guest Katie  says:
Thank you for the wonderful commercial during Saturday night's game. I grew up a huge Denver fan, but lost interest when my Dad died in 2007. He was the reason that I was a Bronco fan. Tim Tebow's stand for Christ with the calling God has given him has revived my Bronco mania mode. My Dad would have been the biggest Tebow fan ever, hands down. The Pats game was painful, but the John 3:16 commercial made it all OK. I love how God is using Tebow to spread the Gospel through one of America's number one idols, NFL. God moves in a mysterious way!!!
Jan 16, 2012 11:57 AM Guest Mike E  says:

Thank YOU very much for the ad during the Denver game on saturday., My wife and I were very surprised and very excited to seek that Focus on the Family was the sponsor. Keep it up!!! more of these would be grreat!!!
Jan 16, 2012 2:32 PM Guest Gospel Joe  says:

Mr. Tebow is just what this nation needs....a sports hero that sends the right message....his identification with the verse John 3:16 has put the gospel in a nutshell back in the national dialogue...which is great.  I was forwarded a link to a live performance of the song entitled "John 3:16" by Cindy Tucker, a previously unknown singer/songwriter.  Turns out all the attention on her song has her in the studio as we speak to get a polished version out the masses....I hope it goes to the top of the charts...its already at the top of the Lord's chart.

Jan 16, 2012 6:06 PM Guest Sylvia  says:

Tim Tebow doesn't have to answer to anyone about his faith, except Almighty God and I believe he is in direct communication with God daily and problably more than once a day.  That does not mean that God makes him win games, as he hasn't won all of them, including the last one against the Patriots... However, the main thing is that Tebow honors God regardless of the outcome of a football game.  More of us Christians need to take a lesson from this young man of faith..

Jan 17, 2012 5:25 AM Guest Anne  says:
To TimTebow and to the faithful folks at Focus: "Well done, good and faithful servants." May each of us carry out our witness as faithfully and has effectively!
Jan 17, 2012 11:12 AM Guest Lily  says:
We praise God for Tim Tebow, and his parents. Tim is preaching to people as a QB; and he is a role model for the young generation. May God protect him!
Jan 18, 2012 11:54 AM Guest Debbie  says in response to Lily:
Thank you so much Focus on the Family for standing for the truth of God's word!  May Jesus Christ our Lord & Savior be honored and glorified always.  John 3:16     I liked what Tim Tebow said, "I don't know what my future holds, but I know who holds my future."  Praise the Lord!  God's not done with Tebow yet.
Jan 18, 2012 5:29 PM Guest Penny  says in response to Brian:
Hello, Brian, this is many days after your post on Jan 14, however, felt compelled to respond.  Bad things do happen to Christians.  By man's free will, sin came into the world (Adam in Genesis). God's eternal purposes are many times incomprehensible.  To save mankind, Jesus died a horrible death on a cruel cross, became sin - a VERY BAD thing viewing it from a human perspective.  The reward of righteousness is not always winning a football game or other good things. Tim Tebow gives God the praise for everything in his life as the goal of all Christians should be.  We are only righteous as we stand in the righteousness of Christ provided through the cleansing of His blood on the cross.  Jesus is our reward and eternal life is our reward.  May I suggest you read Hebrews 11?  This is one of many great passages in the Bible that tells of those who in faith received rewards here on earth and others who did not receive rewards here on earth.  Jesus said that "it rains on the just and unjust."  Paul, one of the apostles suffered horrible things for the glory of God, as have many throughout the centuries. Reading/studying the Bible must be done within its full context.  Taking certain scriptures out of context does not provide the full teaching that is intended many times.  One of my favorite illustrations of our lives is from one of Bruce Wilkinson's books - he tells of how our life here on earth is a small dot and extended from that dot is a long, long, long straight line that represents eternity.  This life is very short.  Eternity is much longer than we can comprehend.  Christians experience trials to mature us, make us stronger, develop character.  And just like anyone else, we will experience bad things.  Jesus is with us through every trial, His presence, wisdom and guidance is more precious than any material, temporal reward.  I want my relationship with Christ to be as close as it can possibly be so that I can know Him now on earth and spend eternity with Him when this life is over.  Jesus is my reward.  Although I do not know Tim Tebow, from what I can determine, Jesus is his reward - winning or losing.  I pray that if you do not know Jesus, that you will come to know Him.  May John 3:16 be made real to you!

i'm a sportsman like most male person and football is one of many games i enjoy. when tim tebow was drafted by the broncos, i was happy because he seem to be overlooked. so when he was picked i was thrilled. i read his story of a fetus almost aborted. thank God for mom that knows better. i was one of the many who prayed for God's intervention in his life. we sure did see God's hand on this man. and to top that also the timely commercial focus on the family. i thought it was good. thank you. jim daly. God bless you & mr. tim tebow platform he is looking for.
