Public Library Pornography

Posted by Jim_Daly on Apr 27, 2011 11:15:18 AM

Have you ever been to the New York City Public Library?NYClibrary.jpg

It's been in the national news this week after its spokesperson announced they'll be making pornography available to any and all of its patrons. This comes as a shock on many levels, especially since adults and children share the same space inside its walls.

This national landmark sits at the corner of Fifth Avenue and 42nd Street. Even if your travels haven't brought you there, you've probably seen it on television or in the movies. Blockbuster hits like Spiderman and Ghostbusters featured the distinctive building, including the two giant stone lions that rest on either side of its main entrance.NYClibrarylions.jpg

For the last one hundred years, through every storm and every season, they've been sitting there, two lions at rest, silently guarding and welcoming the world to its doors.

Their names are Patience and Fortitude.

Tourists often wonder how those statues got their nicknames. The answer to that question, I think, brings us back to the current controversy regarding public funding of pornography.

The lions were originally named Leo Aster and Leo Lenox after the library’s founders, Jon Jacob Astor and James Lenox. But it was the city’s mayor, Fiorello LaGuardia, who renamed the lions, believing New Yorkers needed two main things, patience and fortitude, if they were to survive the Great Depression.

Metaphorically speaking, these lions embodied what the human psyche so desperately craved (and still does) – strength, sturdiness, stability and a willingness to look up even when everything in the world seems to have been turned upside down. rockwellreading.jpg

Public libraries have always represented the nation's highest ideals. Any citizen with a card and curiosity can, by walking inside, step into another world, thousands of miles or even centuries away. The best and brightest societies have always read early and often. They read about the sacred and the secular. They read about heroes and heartache, about wars and peace. They read to make sense of the seemingly senseless. They read about the past, present and future. They read about virtue and honor. They read about these things because they know they’re lacking them; they instinctively know their hearts have a hole – and by reading, they hope to fill it and be inspired to become something more.

But the decision this week by library officials to allow unfettered access to pornography is tantamount to social malpractice. It distorts the very ideals of the public library system – which is to build and train up its people to do good and mighty things.

Libraries were created to host students in search of answers, preachers, teachers, authors, playwrights, lawyers and researchers of every stripe in search of a story, a fact or mere inspiration.  And dreamers. Lots of dreamers. Children investigating careers, explorers and adventurers plotting and planning trips around the world, even brides in search of the perfect dress. And the always steady stream of women and men trying to solve a problem, fix what’s broken, heal a hurt and make the world better and brighter than they found it.

Public libraries were not designed or intended to distribute or provide pornography to any curious citizen with a card.NYClibraryreadingroom.jpg

It was Emerson who once wrote that “patience and fortitude conquer all things” – and indeed, for the most part, they do. In the context of the New York Public Library, these lions are characterized as peaceful because they've long represented good things. They have no prey; they practice patience because for one hundred years, those who have walked past them are curious and come in peace. But now another ravenous lion is on the loose behind them, up the stairs and inside the New York City Library, prowling and lurking to try and devour its victims – at taxpayer’s expense!

That lion is the scourge of pornography in any and all forms. And it is the antithesis of everything that the God who made us all represents.

Can sanity and common sense not prevail to rid our public space of such harmful material?  Ask the little boy or little girl who will be harmed by predators who are lurking, seeking their prey in this place.

I am profoundly saddened and flabergasted and the monstrous idea of having access to pornography in the NY Public Library. Let's pray that the innocent are kept safe from predators that can now be in a public place obtaining all kinds of offensive material.  Is this in the name of freedom?  What's the next step?  Will firearms be freely available or possibly drugs? This is a sign of the times...

Maybe Focus on the Family could support a local group of NYC citizens in protesting this decision. Have a petition cirulated to reverse the decision.

they chose unwisely......yes the victims will be our children...and  the potential pedophils the ny library will have so easily instructed!

It is sad to see the public realm going in a direction that it has no right to go in and obviously violates law by allowing kids to access pornography below the legal age.  That should be enough to override this new policy.
Apr 27, 2011 9:26 PM Guest Lynn  says:
Porn seems to be on a warpath, taking over everywhere you go.  I cant even shop at a grocery store without what used to be considered pornographic pictures, looking me in the face.  My family is a victim to porn.  My spouse was very addicted to this for over 20 years, and I never knew a thing, until God intervened and spoke to me, telling me of his unfaithfulness, and bringing it to light.  He has now lost my love for him as a wife, though I have a Godly love for him, he has lost the respect of his children, and has caused great damage to us.  I implore anyone that is addicted to porn in any way, please get help and get out before it is literally too late and you lose what is most important to you.
Apr 29, 2011 12:08 PM Guest Concerned Delawarian  says:

With New York allowing pornography it is just the beginning. Delaware Public Libraries it is still not permitted, as they banned pratrons who do not abide their "acceptable use policy" but yet do not use content filtering on computers that adults are accessing information. Below is what I wrote to the Governor of Delaware and it was forwarded to the State Librarian. Her reply is posted as well.

Come on folks, The power of Prayer does wonders. Protect our kids!!!!

Comment/Question: Dear Governor,

I am appalled with the news that has transpired this past week concerning Rehoboth Public Library. Most likely all Delaware Public Libraries. A patron supposedly looking at porn on the library computers. Where is the filtering? I do not care if they are for adult use. Internet filtering should be the number one protection. Children are in our public libraries. So if you are over 18 you can use computers with no filtering? Come on, you should know better. I have given permission to my children under 10 to use the computers at the public library. After this news I will not allow kids to use the library computers. Is content filtering not installed all public library computer for adult use?

Some libraries do not have enough room for separate computers for kids and adults. I would like to know the use policy on all Delaware Public Libraries and what you do to protect the patrons of the library. I assumed the library would have content Internet filtering and that we are protected from such inappropriate content.

A concerned citizen of Delaware

The library community shares your concern that no person should be permitted to view pornography in a Delaware public library.  Last year, Governor Markell signed legislation confirming the ability of libraries to ban any patron who may view inappropriate material in a public library whether they are using a library computer or using their own personal wireless device. The patron in question is now on a statewide list of persons banned from using a library computer, and is not permitted to enter a library at all.

Libraries serve all ages in the community and although public schools filter content for children, filtering limits access to legitimate materials that can be inadvertently blocked, and are needed by the community. All public libraries in the State including the Rehoboth Library abide by the state's Child Internet Protection Act (CIPA). CIPA does require every library in the State to have an "acceptable use policy," and every library in the State has adopted a policy that prohibits patrons from viewing pornography in the library.  As mentioned, any person that violates this policy is subject to immediate termination of their access rights.  The Delaware Division of Libraries provided a grant to each Delaware public library this year to ensure that they could all implement a safe solution for children. Rehoboth Beach Public Library has 2 Early Literacy Stations with children's software in their Children's room so far, and is planning additional solutions.

Sincerely,

Great article.  What action do you want us to take?  Is there a petition to electronically sign or a NY official's email address/phone number to contact?

My heart breaks at this news.  Sounds like Sodom and Gomorah and we'll eventually spiral down to the same outcome.  May God have mercy on this country.  Our end will be as He calls it, but if His people pray ( or just get up and fight the foe) He will hear from heaven and heal our land and possibly give us a few more years to spread His Good News.

This is awfully sad. Saw the subject line in my email and followed the link here to get such crazy news. The only good part about it is that Christ must not be too far away from coming back. Wow.
Apr 28, 2011 6:56 AM Guest Matt T.  says:
I live in Colorado Springs with my wife and I agree with the tone of this article 100%.  I completely oppose tax dollars ever funding pornography especially when kids could possibly view it.  I have to wonder what can myself and others who don't live in New Yory City do about this?  I would welcome a signed petition or something along those lines.  Perhaps someone could post the address of the library and we could flood them with negative letters showing our concern.  I look forward to reading other responses and ideas.  God Bless.
Apr 27, 2011 9:52 PM Guest JD  says:

As an ordinary citizen I have tried to stop this from coming to our libraries for quite some time and complained that we would be opening them up as a magnet for sexual predators sitting next to either our children or any decent person who would naturally be repelled by such an atmosphere.  Can these public libraries really do such a thing with our taxpayer dollars without our approval?  I seriously doubt it and think it is tme to cut off the libraries from any such ludicrous funding.  Like the schools, the libraries, I'm sorry to say have been infiltrated with radical Leftists at the top making these kinds of decisions. There has been an eroding of decency in libraries, just as there has been a breakdown of morals in our public schools. I have worked at a few libraries and it has been apparent to me. I was forced to display a magazine with a very inappropriate cover showing two lesbians kissing.  The library director could have easily agreed not to display the magazine, but, instead, he made the conscious decision to insist I display it despite my moral objections. I quit my job rather than display the immoral magazine.  As I left, I told him it goes contrary to the Bible. He responded by saying, "in your Bible, not in my Bible (or he said something similar to this)".

Apr 27, 2011 10:03 PM Guest Cim Thog  says:

This is crazily ridiculous and comically idiotic.

Where is the world heading. Homosexuality has been legalized in  many states, now pornography is on the loose. If a sex-crazed society like ours is taking this posture, then how educated are the heads and hearts of the people?

Apr 27, 2011 10:04 PM Guest Debbi  says:

How can we the people of God put a stop to this???

This is wrong, very wrong!

Apr 27, 2011 10:10 PM Guest Sharon  says:
That is horrifying!
Apr 28, 2011 6:37 AM Guest Cyndy  says:

It seems impossible to believe that sane people can support pornography in any venue, but especially at a public library. Every great society in history has met its demise by first falling from within. Inner corruption has always preceded a society's collapse and there is nothing more corrupt than pornography. Shame on us for allowing our nations to reach this state. What would our forefathers say? What will God say?

Apr 28, 2011 2:23 PM Guest Rev. Fowler  says:

I ask this of FOTF and all the other key Christian organizations that are either influences by or supported within the Focus Family. Other than publishing one's discuss over these actions what do you plan to do about it? On who's door step do you think you are going to sit until this atrocity is rectified? Is the New York City Library sponsored by "Tax Payer's" money, if so can't the constituency force an injunction, or a city ordnance to disavow any and all public funds to any library who allows the use and possible endorsement of pornography within the Public Library System. Those who want to force a First Amendment Freedom of Speech issue can deal with Federal, State, and Municipal Tax supported obscenity. That will look really good on those who try to get reelected with in the Senate and the House. Coordinate the presure needed to make this issue a life and death issue for any "public official." Then we will see how important this "Freedom" is for those in office.

Apr 28, 2011 2:41 PM Guest Tammy  says:
This is a travesty! Will the "library" become the new pedophile hangout?  I am completely disgusted! If people want porn they can pay for it themselves, not on taxpayers dollars!
Apr 27, 2011 10:31 PM Guest Bill L  says:
Most libraries are going broke because everything is now instantly available on the Internet including every book they stock.  So it is no surprise to me that they resort to cheap and shocking tactics to get attention and consequently patrons into their building.  The problem with that is they get undesirables and problems instead of readers.  And how will they handle the pedophile who holds pornographic books open in the presence of children?  Porn is a bad idea where ever it goes.
Apr 27, 2011 10:35 PM Guest Sharon  says:
I am appalled but not surprised. Already we have "kiddie porn" in the children's section of most public libraries. One example is books by Judy Blume, which all seem to have at least one paragraph of material I find highly objectionable. (And her adult books are pure filth.) Parents have to be very vigilant if they want to protect their children from pornography.

Convenient how you always seem to leave out the details so your readers are compelled to accept your position. Details like the sites you claim are pornographic. Is it the raw video pornography that anyone tries to protect thier children from or is ir just a few artists you don't like? It's impossible to tell from your blog which is the case.

Unbelievable!
Apr 28, 2011 6:41 AM Guest dani  says:

A few years ago, I was at the main library in downtown Sacramento, CA, when a woman started shrieking at a man who was sitting next to her and was viewing pornography on a computer; those privacy screens don't work so well after all. She became completely unglued, and was obviously a bit unbalanced because she continued to shreik and yell for some time. But, once things calmed down, I went to get something off the printer and what was sitting there was very disturbing, and something I never should have had to see. They were, undoubtedly, pictures of the porn that he had sent to the printer and then left behind. The library continues to defend the access to pornography.

I am surprised and saddened to see no other comments posted after 3,970 views.  What a haven for those pedophiles that can't own a computer, perhaps they are not allowed to have a library card either, however, they are supposedly not allowed to do many other things as well yet they seem to do many things they are not allowed to under their probation.  Are these computers in private areas?  Pornography hurts everyone, not just those that view it. What it does to a person, what it does to one's psyche is irreparable.  I drive down the street and see a billboard that says, "Pornography victimizes women and children", and now tax dollars are to pay for the abuse of women and children?   Just another testament to the the downfall of our society.

I once visited this huge and historically wonderful New York Public Library in a travel to a national art educators conference  held in the Big Apple and I ask will the decision there by its Library Director cause to infect other libraries in other cities across our country?
Apr 28, 2011 4:14 AM Guest Tammy  says:
I am an educator and mother who uses the library frequently. Once while tutoring a student, we passed by a young teenager who was watching porn on the public computer. I immediately distracted my student and reported this violation. The librarian swiftly shut down the teenager's harmful site, shocked that he was able to access it. When the student's mom picked him up, I told her about the incident and she was thankful that I shielded her child. If this disgusting and dangerous practice is allowed to take place in the New York Public Library, my fear is that it will spread to other libraries. We cannot allow this travesty! As a woman and a mother, I would not feel safe using or sending my children to the bathrooms especially knowing that this garbage could be infiltrating the minds of the patrons. This is horrific!

Apr 28, 2011 4:58 AM Guest Sheri  says:
Can the people of the city or even the country protest and fight against this? Or is there no hope for a turn around? Hopefully the library will see a decline in its citizens to send a loud message.

What a terrible shame and outright evil!  Is there nothing that can be done to keep this from happening?  America is rotting from the inside. Pornography is ILLEGAL. How can it be publicly funded and how can it be offered as a public service?
Apr 28, 2011 7:48 AM Guest cmg  says:
This is just unbelievable! We can kill children in the womb. It just follows course that we would leave them to the lions to devour now in our public librairies. Don't it just figure?
Apr 28, 2011 7:47 AM Guest elaine  says:
It is a sad day when we unwittingly pollute the innocent minds of children under the guise of freedom.  All access to pornography does is bind a weighty shackle around the heart of the viewer.  The earlier the images are projected into children's minds, the more insidious its evil.  The degradation promoted by pornography should set it off limits for all members of society.  Furthermore a sacred place of learning is now becomimg a place where filth is as accessible as timeless, inspiring literature.  We need to pray that God brings revival to the hearts of the American people whereby patience and fortitude will become instilled into our hearts once again.
Apr 28, 2011 5:52 AM Guest Lauren  says:

Wow, this is sickening. One can already access this filth easily enough on internet and more. There are already enough places to go to find evil and debauchery. Why oh why must they open the public library to such sin??? And what kind of people might now want to get a library card? Will this library become a dangerous place (in certain respects)? I know that I wouldn't want to go there with my kids with the probability of people coming to feast upon sin. Would you want to go there? I pray this does not spread to the other libraries! We should all entreat upon the Lord to not let this plauge spread. However, this is just a sign of the end times, man sinks more and more into the pit. Jesus help us.

Apr 28, 2011 7:51 AM Guest L.C.  says:
I agree with your words 100+% and am appalled at what is yet another means to deteriorate the overall health and well-being of our society. Is there any place that is safe and sacred for our families? Oh God, help our leaders to recognize how much they need you. Give them wisdom and help them to use it wisely, not to serve the masses, but to serve you first and foremost. Help us to value what you value. Open the eyes of our hearts that we may see the further damage this will cause on so many levels. For those who cause little children to stumble it would be better that he be drowned into the depths of the sea with a millstone tied around his neck. Matthew 18. This is so deeply saddening to me. Now my future grandchildren won't be able to ponder the library on their own without their parents hovering to be sure they don't stumble on this garbage. Oh Lord, protect the hearts and minds of the littlest ones. Instill in us your decrees. Amen.
Apr 28, 2011 7:52 AM Guest Lois  says:
Has the American Center for Law & Justice been contacted about this? Contact www.aclj.org to get their contact information, please. This trashy "move" on the part of NYC is DISGUSTING. Can't we DO something to STOP it? I realize all the wickedness is prophecy being fulfilled - yes, I truly believe this - but we still just can't sit by and do nothing to fight this filth. God expects us to use the brains He gave us to have strength and power of a sound mind. Please, let's fight this.

Very alarming!  In the past I have encountered 2! convicted pedifiles on the computers in our library with a host of young children down stairs.  When brought to the librarians attention she contacted authorities on the law regarding them being so close to children.  She was told they have a right to be there as long as they don't go down stairs!  Now they will be fed enticing images and be so close to our children?!  I am sick to my stomach.
Apr 28, 2011 7:57 AM Guest mokyfellow  says:
If I had to choose to keep one of the three things pornography, guns or drugs out of our library, I would pick porn.  When the love and desire of pornography gets into a persons mind, it is very difficult to remove.  But, I will fight to the end to keep all negative things out of our local library.
Apr 28, 2011 6:49 AM Guest Terry  says:

By law libraries cannot discriminate / censure materials, speech.  Also by law they cannot allow minors to be in the presence of, or have access to pornography.  To view pornography is a right, to expose pornography to a minor is illegal and punishable by law.  That is why at our library the publc access computers are out in the open in a public area, are blocked from "mature" content unless explicetly requested.  Any exposure of pornography to a minor is a violation of federal law, and library policy with immediate  suspendtion of patronage rights. The criminal process is another issue.

I found your article to be general, unspecific, and unreseached.  I expect better from Focus.

Apr 28, 2011 6:55 AM Guest Lynne  says in response to smithlegs:

I have been exposed to porn on many levels through out my adult life.  I have four kids and have gone over board to keep my kids from being exposed to it.   It saddens my heart to think that this world finds it so acceptable. I have been laughed at by many men when I have stood my ground on the harm that it causes families!  Pornography does victimize women and children.  We all need to pray for the children of our world to keep them away from this horrible evil!

An acquaintance of mine who is a librarian (two, actually) was trying to tell me why they don't approve of filters on library computers -- sometimes screens out stuff people need to find for papers, they sometimes can't identify objectionable material immediately, etc.etc.  After providing about 6-7 "excuses" and my having knocked all of them down, she finally admitted that she (and other librarians, not to mention the ALA) believes children have a first-amendment right to view pornography on public computers.
Apr 28, 2011 7:02 AM Guest Tami  says in response to smithlegs:
We need to consider banning library cards to felons just as they are banned from other rights in our country, i.e. voting, owning firearms.  Of course this isn't perfect as it will only ban those who have a record and it wouldn't stop those who don't.  This sounds to me it's more a free-product issue than a free speech issue.  I suppose tax payers will be paying for that, too.
Apr 28, 2011 7:03 AM Guest Randy  says:
Our kids are not the only ones at risk...Our wives and husbands....Rape may be on the increase.......We are all at risk...Let's go down our knees and cry to our God to save this generation...
Apr 28, 2011 7:18 AM Guest Sheila  says:

Nancy, I agree, we should take some action to oppose and hopefully reverse this horrible decision.  The library is giving the porn industry access to our children in the name of "free speech."  How can our government allow this?  I would hope the well-being of our children would come before anyone's right to openly view porn in a public place.  This is crazy!!!  We must do something to protect our children.  The insanity of people who support this is beyond my understanding.  Besides the library, to whom else would you recommend sending letters?

Apr 28, 2011 7:22 AM Guest Ash  says:
While I understand people's outrage about the NY LIbrary, this is not a new thing for libraries. My university library allows people to watch pornography on the computers. All they can do is, if someone complains, is to move the porn-watcher to a more secluded spot. And I know that many other academic and public libraries also allow pornography. This can be defended on the perspective that libraries are founded on access to information and non-censorship. The NY Library is not alone in its decision. I don't agree with their policy, and I think it is horrible, but it is by no means new in library-land.
Apr 28, 2011 9:14 AM Guest nora b.  says:
Thank you for taking a stand against the wickedness and devastation of pornography.  Many who read your article or hear about it on the news are concerned but do not know what to do.  I suggest that a copy of this article be printed and taken to the staff of your local library to show your concern.  The best weapon Christians can use against the darkness of sin is the light of God's love.  Where light is created, darkness flees.  Think how much light would be created if each of us strike a match or light a small candle.  By bringing this to the attention of your librarian and showing your concern, you are lighting your candle.

This is very sad! Further evidence of the great divide between two very different philosophies here in America. Unfortunately, many, many a Christian parent has already missed that there is a great struggle for their child's mind and have yielded their child to a public system that does not only does not want the child to know Christian values but wants to transform them into antiChristian. God bless Focus for bringing these important updates.

Apr 28, 2011 9:19 AM Guest Cathie M.  says:
Something escapes me, isn't pornography illegal? Or only child porn? Is not exposing yourself publicly a crime?...flashing they used to call it. How can this now be permitted to general public and children? Could it be that what's wrong is called right and what's right (decency and deference) is called wrong? Dear God, take us home!
Apr 28, 2011 7:41 AM Guest Stacy  says:
SCARY! Who would have thought that the public library would be added to the list of places my daughter is not allowed to go! I agree with every reply thus far! We need to hit our knees!
Apr 28, 2011 7:42 AM Guest Israel  says:

Mr. Daly,

I work in a library at a university setting. I read a while back that there was a public library in California tha was being sued by a mother of a 12 year old boy. Apparently, the boy was visiting the library on a daily basis. This drew concern on the part of the mother to which she followed him one day and found out he was porn surfing on the libraries public computers.

This rapidly growing epidemic amongst preteens & teens has got to be corraled and taken care of before our children develop these ungodly habbits that disrepects God's creation.

Heartbreaking and scary---I was at my local grocery with and they had streaming footage of Jersey Shore promoting some books they were selling.  I was so sad to see women in brawl fights barely dressed, lap dancing etc.  I asked manager two separate occasions to please turn it off.  Then went  through the  corporate office via email and told them I would no longer be able to shop at their stores.  I did receive a phone call and it was taken down.  I was relieved that I would be able to take my adolescent children to the store again.  What is this world coming to when we can't go to the library or grocery shop without being bombarded with pornography.

When you live in a society that many defend killing the innocent unborn and the defenseless elderly or disabled (abortion and euthansia), should it really come as a surprise that our children are no longer being protected...then I think of how Satan thinks of ways to destroy families...if he can get to our kids before they grow up, he thinks he has won.  And yet, aren't some of the greatest testimonies of those who love and follow the Lord--aren't they the ones who have lived in Satan's torments of temptations (sin is an ugly, ugly thing!) and God has redeemed and they have overcome!!!  Romans 8:28---and remember in Bible times, they struggled with these things as well.  I don't know what God has planned for us (whether He will continue to give us over to our sin as a nation or whether He will intervene and save us from ourselves) but I know that He is the one who can bring change....let us pray for all of these people who think they are doing good or right or who are just being spiteful  and mean--whatever their hearts are--let us pray for their salvation and pray for our nation...that is where our hope lies:)

How did our legal system and government become so corrupted and perverted in it's idea of "freedom of speech" etc., allowing such filth to permeate our public institutions, etc.??  I am shocked, to say the least.  We are fast losing our once cherished constitution and it's  principles for which our forefathers stood, gave their lives, honor and fortune for.  How can we stand by and watch America go to the "DOGS"?  Actually dogs are much better than many of

our supposed public servants, who are only serving themselves and false principles that are

bringing us as a nation down.  What can we do to change this fast snowball downhill?

Just yesterday I came across a copy of a letter I had written to our central downtown library (10) ten years ago.  In the letter I spoke of how unacceptable it was that my three children(7,9,11) on computers in the children's room had pornohraphy "just pop up" on one of the computers while they were looking for information/pictures on Brittany Spears.  I was told then that nothing could be done.  It was a "public" library and they did not have the ability to control what came through even on the computers in the children's room.  The moral decline in our country has been "snowballing" ever since.  Sometimes it can be depressing to think about the condition of our world, but then I'm encouraged because the Word tells us that things will get "horrible" in preparation for Christ's return.   By the way, we live in Greensboro, North Carolina, not New York city.

The first time I visited the NYC Public Library was around 1984.

I was the luncheon speaker for a teacher convention.  My focus was on closing drug paraphernalia shops but since they also stocked pornographic magazines, I mentioned a few words about porn in library and how our hands were tied unless you wanted to fight two battles at once and censorship as well.  Adults appear too timid to take on the porn issue.

However, I believe until we do it will remain front and center.  Upon my return home, I visited the library nearest my home and spoke with the two librarians at the front desk.  They practically begged me to take on the issue.  They reported that adult transgender individuals appeared to be who used it most.  They would bring up a particularly graphic porn photo and then, yell "COME LOOK WHAT I FOUND ON MY COMPUTER, YOU'RVE NEVER SEEN THIS BEFORE AND LITTLE BOYS HURRIED OVER.  BEFORE I LEFT THEY BEGGED ME TO GO TO THE COUNTY LIBRARY SYSTEM AND PROTEST."   SINCE I WAS WORKING TO GET DRUGS OUT OF SCHOOLS, INCLUDING CLOSING MARYLAND'S DRUG PARAPHERNALIA SHOPS  AND THEN DIRECTING THE MOVEMENT THAT CLOSED THEM NATIONWIDE, I HAD PLENTY TO DO.  I UNDERSTAND SOME RELIGIOUS GROUPS ARE FOLLOWING IT UP.

I have been writing about the Brooklyn Public Library for years, starting with the guy who sent me pictures of people viewing porn because the library would not help him.  And notice how the "privacy screens" are useless, even when viewed from an angle.  I even think the library director quit over this issue.

Apr 28, 2011 10:31 AM Guest Linda P.  says:
We must do more than pray.  If I was in New York I would be protesting this decision to encourage pornography in it's libraries.  How does viewing pornography encourage learning?  The XXX Theatres are available for that disgusting information.  Children should never be exposed to pornography anywhere, especially Public Librarys .  God Help Us!!!  Another sign of the times-ending times.

Thank you for writing about this extremely controversial topic. This isn't just occurring in NYC, it is in every library system, with the exception of a small handful. I beg each of you to contact your local library and inquire. The folks who are to blame for this, is the American Library Association-hanging it all on our 1st Amendment. They are powerful and sick the ACLU on anyone who tries to interrupt their business of pushing porn. As a community, we each have to decide if we want the ALA, or our own community, controlling our tax dollars and what our children are exposed to. I must warn you, arm yourself with a lot of info before taking action, as the ALA has every library director under their control and have also brainswashed the media. Sadly, as Christians, the best way to stop porn in our public libraries isn't using our faith-they will close their eyes and shut their ears-each of us must focus on the safety of our children as the true and urgent issue. An excellent resource for this is a website called safelibraries.org the gentleman behind the scene is an amazing advocate for stopping  this outrageous activity-just be warned-his website tells it like it is. You will read one story after another of crimes that have been committed against children in a library-by a man fresh off of viewing porn at the computer in the public library. I also beg each of yout to never let your children enter a library alone and NEVER enter the bathroom alone. I have been up all night again with our son, who has had several nights of nightmares due to him witnessing a man assault me after I caught him viewing porn in the children's section of our "very nice" public library. I snapped a photo on my cell phone, and the man assualted me-not one charge has been made-yet. That is all I can say, as it is under investigation from our Atty. Gen. office. Two more things-having a filter on a computer is useless unless it is on the maximum level, and beware of your public school libraries-they are also under the power of the ALA. God Bless.

Must be a national movement. In Seattle this week has been the story of the King County Library system allowing a 14 year old to check out NC17 "The Making of Deep Throat". The library remains firm that it is not their responsiblity to restrict what patrons or children are viewing.  The internet is automatically filtered for child accounts but adults can ask to bypass the filter and access what they will.  A listener on a secular talk show program pointed out that our area prohibits adult entertainment businesses to be opened near a library.  But now children can access media inside the library?  The listener stated if the library wanted to restrict, they would find a way to do it.  This wasn't even a christian perspective.  This all led to a long discussion on my facebook page about our society and our "freedoms" of individuality (what one person considers pornographic is different from anothers opinion" according to the head of KC Library System) that have mainstreamed sexuality, groomed our citizens, like a pedophile grooms a child, for this now movement to open up the public realm to pornography. The rights and freedoms trump good sense to protect the innocent and children. Science be darned & thrown out, to consider the harm mentally & emotionally of early exposure to sexuality.  I for one am sick of my personal rights to remain conservative - or even my simple right to NOT expose my children to content until they are age appropriate and mentally capable of handling it - being trumped by all these "freedom" rights.
Apr 28, 2011 10:43 AM Guest RamFM  says in response to chris4Christ:
This makes me so angry, disgusted, fearful, outraged.  We have 5 kids, all still in school.  When I heard about the NY story yesterday, my husband said I shouldn't be shocked. I've known this was coming for a long time. Yes, I said - but I thought it wouldn't be so quick. The absolute acceptance & promotion of porn in a realm like that. In a world so incredibly sexualized, with our children at the heart of the attack & goals here, how do we protect them?  The movement is larger than we even know or want to admit.
Apr 28, 2011 10:54 AM Guest Rita A  says:
I think pedophiles lurk everywhere, so suddenly allowing pornography access in a public library is not going to draw them out - I'm certain they have been there all along!   I don't understand the "rationale" behind this decision: pornography can be obtained rather easily as it is but is regulated by "carding" the purchaser requiring proof of age, like cigarettes and alcohol. What system is the library installing to regulate who has access to their pornography?  If anyone with a library card has unrestricted access, isn't the library in violation of state and federal laws which require proof of age?
Apr 28, 2011 10:45 AM Guest Ann  says in response to Cathie M.:

Unfortunately, viewing, and even saving, images of ADULT pornography is not illegal. Morally wrong, yes, totally degrading to women, and an acidic tonic to the soul, but not illegal. Laws were just changed recently that made simply viewing CHILD pornography illegal (whereas before one had to actually possess images to be found guilty of a child pornography charge), which is a step in the right direction in THAT regard. People's comments here regarding "pedophiles" are a bit off, because they are mixing adult pornography with child pornography - that's not to say that a person who views adult pornography doesn't oftentimes slide down the slippery slope from adults to college-aged, to teens, and then to children... I've seen it with my own eyes, sad to say... And having this unfiltered access may just afford them the freedom to view child pornography without being caught: all of those who have previously worried about the recorded and documented viewing history on their own computers may now have free surfing capabilities thanks to local libraries and taxpayers' dollars.

Is there anything we can do to make it so it doesn't happen in our State and to make it go to back to the way it was?  I know pray, pray, pray but is there a petition or anything people can sign? That is very scary that my kids could get that from a library. Thankfully its not here yet but because one state has it I'm scared it could come here.

I think something should be done to protect our kids worldwide. I am a Christian but I know nonChristians who even think that its bad and I know someone who even had a porn issue and he said that was just horrible. Its wrong that some little kid could be minding his or her own business and just see it cause someone else chose to look at it.

God help this country!

Do not be so sad - God is STILL in control.  Yes, we must rise up and voice our objections and do whatever we can to stop taxpayer funding of pornography but God isn't finished with any of them (or us) yet.  When I was growing up in an atheist home with a party-girl mother of the 60's, my school was still primarily Christian and so I did hear about Jesus Christ even though it really meant little to me.  I always felt out of step as the only atheist child that had never heard about God or Jesus nor seen a Bible and it created an anger in me towards Christians.  When I was in my early 20's I enjoyed shocking you "deluded" Christians with all your "hung-up" morals by walking into the X-rated section of the video stores and I felt NO shame to put those movies up and rent them.  But, God has a way of working, and to those of us that truly never knew any better, He's a most gracious God indeed!  I was called from atheism into the Catholic Church in my 20's (not long after those pornography filled days) and I am a very pure and very devout Catholic that NOW fully feels the shame of my previous life (despite knowing I'm forgiven and praising God for that grace).  My point is, PRAY for these sinners and LOVE the sinner but hate the sin.  As a church we (all of us from all denominations) must raise our voices against this but we must still love the sinner and try to show them a better way.  Many people will never read a Bible but you can be their Bible today.  (Kudos for the woman that quit her library job rather than display homosexual pictures.)  Just remember to NEVER give up praying for these souls, God can change them and it won't happen when Christians are hateful and dramatic.  Be calm, call it wrong (that's truth) and bring logical argument - "it's illegal for minors still"; "it will create the need for much policing within the library", "it will create stimulation and then the person will be IN the library with children...", etc.  We can do this church, let's raise a voice against this (but still love those lost souls that want it - they don't know any better).

Thank you FOTF for keeping our awareness up and calling attention to this situation.  I live in a very Metropolitan area in the South, and visit our libraries frequently.  I have been in my local library and discussed their position on "porn viewing"/ unsafe sites, etc on the public computers and know that they have taken precautions to block certain sites from view especially since I have children who might be using their computers. I also have made myself familiar with the statistics on porn and did not hesitate to use some of them to support my point.  I do mention that I'm an educator and talk about all of the things that we have to do to support the children within our schools related to mandated reporting, which includes incidents involving pornography. This seems to really get their attention and respect.  I have received a lot of support and feel that maybe this is an individual library battle.

I think it is important that we all go to our libraries, make ourselves known in a positive light and then try to influence from there.  No naivete however on my part thinking that everyone in my library only visits wholesome sites; it is also not shocking that those who are sinners will do what sinners do best.....sin.  So, be encouraged to fight the battle systematically and expect to win.  We wage these wars not against flesh and blood, but against the powers of darkness.  Cry out for the mercy of God, but walk in the power of the Holy Spirit!

The reference to pedophile in my response is in relation to the desensitization of our society that leads to us standing by and allowing this media source where children can, have and will be exposed to it.  I've been watching this trend for 15 years since I had my daughter, the sexualization of their clothes from very young ages, the media, entertainment world, sporting ads - over a long period of time, which actually is a relatively short period of time - to bring us to this point of acceptance of public displays of adult sex acts.  Those of us familiar with the behavior of pedophiles know that grooming takes time, is conducted in view of other adults and subtle (like an "accidental" exposing a child to photo or media).  The underlying goal is long term.  The next generation and the opening up of our children for victimization. First, you have to get around the adults and lull them into a false sense of what is acceptable.  My comment is not about labeling porn users as pedophiles. I do understand the difference.
Apr 28, 2011 11:27 AM Guest John  says:
I agree with Lynn - porn & other evils are on the warpath.  We need to recognize that this is indeed war.  We need to prepare for this war, this day of evil, by putting on the full armor of God (Ephesians 6).  Then recognize that Jesus, in His zeal for His Father's house, overturned the money changers' tables.  By doing so, he showed us that there are appropriate times for righteous anger and action.  The progressives of our country do not have any problem with disruptive behavior, so maybe we should employ some of their tactics in very publically bringing light of the darkness of their evil - I am thinking protests, sit down strikes, protests outside of library official's homes, etc.

Yesterday I got into a discusion w/a few of my friends about this issue and was shocked how complacent individuals are about this issue in the name of limiting government control and individual freedoms in America.  I am not posting this as a religious zealot by any means.  The scripture happened across my path this morning and I found it interesting it was written so long ago, describing the absolute attitude of what appears to be the loudest on so many issues.  Why is not the protection and love for our sweet children trumping this issue and standing the forefront?  God is in control but He doesn't ask us to be complacent & lazy, waiting for the end to arrive. Humanity should cherish those that can't cherish themselves, protect our next generation and understand there is a middle ground. It does not have to be one extreme or the other.  I like Chris4Christ response that we can't just fight this on a religious base.  He has a valid point unfortunately.  Good is labeled evil, conservative/christianity/morals - labeled controlling and stripping the rights of others.  Freedom demoralized so that we can actually encourage people to live in bondage to yet another mentally stimulating drug.

It is scandalous to think that any library would do such an obsene thing!  What is wrong with New York lately?  I've been hearing about some truly disturbing things going on there.  If our country doesn't get a handle on morality soon, we are going to be doomed & our demise will be of our own making.  When morality disappears, a nation crumbles.  Where is people's common sense?  Where is personal integrity?  Does no one have any sense of decency anymore????

Is anyone able to think clearly and judge rightly?  Since when is pornography a beneficial thing??!!!!   It is HEINOUS!

Apr 28, 2011 2:56 PM Guest robert  says:
Even though this is a deplorable turn of events, the solution is quite simple.  Don't have computers in libraries!  LIbraries are for books!! Please, though, don't take the next step and ban books!  Libraries are repositories of the world's great literature (insight, thought, wisdom, etc), which should always be available to us. If we aren't allowed to read everything, we won't be able to approach those who oppose us.  Knowledge is Power!  God gave us a brain, so we ought to use it!
Apr 28, 2011 12:09 PM Guest Addie  says in response to Linda P.:
I agree that children should NEVER be exposed to pornography anywhere, especially a Public Library!!! I think the library "elders" who allowed this would reconsider if public pressure were brought to bear. EMAILS. Also, if hundreds of people from THAT library RETURNED THEIR CHILDREN'S (& maybe their own?) LIBRARY CARDS, that would send a strong message. Letters to the NEWSPAPERS, and to POLITICIANS. We must not let this disease of complacency spread & poison the minds of our children, or we will see Babylon with a vengeance! Children are so vulnerable! Satan's laughing all the way to the Library! Fortunately, this is not a surprise to God, & he will deal with those "open-minded" so-called "leaders" who brought this into law. What are the chances some of THEM might be into porn? ... just a thought.

First things first, any material not meant for children should be kept completely away from children.  That being said, the tax system which provides non-profits a tax-free chunk of land (paid for by other property owners' taxes regardless of their views) is at work here.  Anyone ever ask why the system should favor very specific personal or religious views and not the people at large?  Oh wait, someone did ask that question and the people at large were granted their rights.  Organizations of people simply can't take and not giveth.

Mr. Daly,

As a Christian librarian I can understand your frustation, however, I am disappointed by the fact that you did not fully represent all sides of the story in a truthful manner. You did not explain that filters that block out pornography may also block sites that do not have pornographic content, such as sites about breast cancer. Often if patrons are looking at content that makes other patrons or librarians uncomfortable they are asked to stop. However, I can imagine that in a library the size of the New York Public library it can be difficult for librarians or computer assistants to constantly monitor what's going on. It's hard to do even in small libraries, as often librarians are trying to multitask and help people find the resources they need, especially in this economy. I also believe that Christians should provide their own filters and teach their children to do the same, not rely on computers to do the work that we should be doing ourselves. As Christians we are called to be a redemptive force in the world, so my suggestion would be to get involved in your library! Become a friend of your local public library, volunteer, and explore the ways that libraries can honor God by providing safe havens for a variety of people in the community, giving a free education to those who can't afford it, a play area for children, and so much more. Check out books that represent Christian values, because the more these books get checked out the more these books will get purchased! However, please do not condemn libraries and librarians without having walked a mile in their shoes and without having fully representing all sides of the story.

I am sad to say that I believe it is my generation of Boomers that led our country down the slippery slope of declining morality. Although I was not at the front of that line, I did very little then in the way of taking a stand for godly principles. Many of the outrageous decisions in the name of freedom of speech were championed by opinionated and very vocal individuals who were unafraid and unashamed to make their beliefs known. As Christians, we are called to stand, unashamedly, for Jesus Christ. I fear that many of us do nothing but lie down in defeat, and then we complain. We need to arm ourselves with knowledge of the issues that run contrary to God's commandments on the local, state and national levels. Next, we need to choose our words carefully and make our views known through any means possible--letters to the editor, by contacting our senators representatives, phone calls, blogs, emails, social networking sites and by monetarily helping legitimate organizations such as FOF, American Family Association and The Susan B. Anthony foundation. Bathe your efforts in prayer and watch God work.

Pornography is already excessable through the internet, it does not need to be publically funded and in plain view of children. Decency is being routed in all parts of our lives, decency for each other, men for women and adults for children. Why are we so bent on destroying it in our children now?

Agreeing with the sadness regarding the introduction of porngraphy to the offerings of the NY Public Library, the decline of societal noms is alarming.

I wasn't questioning your reference to pedophile - your post came up as I was composing my own... I had just noticed that in several earlier posts that many people were using the term... as I said in my post, I have personally witnessed the devastating pull from viewing adult pornography to the destruction of viewing child pornography, and unfortunately it's mind-bending draw for further and further stimulation - all the way to the sexual assault of a minor. Needless to say this topic strikes a chord deep within me, and I fear for our youth in a way most others can't fathom. I agree with you: the desensitization of our society is appauling! And the sexualization that we are faced with everywhere is gastly! This is one of the many reasons we no longer have t.v. service in our home. Communication is paramount between my children and myself, to help bridge the gap that is consistently being dug by this world. I know the Lord still rules on High, and I know that in the end, He will win, and that I am a part of that winning team... But until that Day, I must stay the course, and teach my children what is right and true, so that they will be able to also walk the path that is right and true.

Here's how:  go to your local library that permits porn-viewing, and take your digital camera with you.  Walk in back of people who are using the computers.  If you see someone looking at porn on the computer, walk right around to the front where you can see their face, and TAKE MULTIPLE SNAPSHOTS!!!  Then inform them that, using the same "freedom of speech' that they are exercising, you are going to post those pictures on the website which has been set up to identify viewers of porn at local libraries.  Then set up the website, and get it going.  Take personal responsibility to right a wrong in your community, rather than whine about the government not doing it.
That is what we are all going to have to do, in order to take this country back from those who have corrupted it.  Enlist others to your cause, and get it going!

I was appaled when my dad called me and told me not to let our boys near the computers at our public library because they are allowed to view pornography!!  It doesn't really supprise me since things have been getting worse and will continue to until Christ comes back. It's just sad and makes me not want to take the kids to the library!
Apr 28, 2011 1:54 PM Guest Gin  says:
So if someone is accessing pornography at a library computer and a child walks by and see is, does that not pose a problem? Or if the person walks away with the pornographic website left on the screen? What about the child who registers to use a computer after school. Will they now have access to any website they choose even if they're only 10 years old? Parents won't be able to drop their kids off at the library for an hour if that's the case. Libraries will become "adult" venues. Tax dollars will be spent to buy more computers to accomodate those who need to access their porn sites. I'd ask what this world is coming to, but I guess we know the answer to that already.
Apr 28, 2011 3:25 PM Guest BV  says:

THis is terrble BUT as Christians we have a responsibility to shine light in dark places. HIS LIGHT! As Americans we have the responsibility to tell our representatives and our communities how our tax dollars should be spent and the kind of country you want to live in. IF you are not shining HIS light into the lives of people who are hurting so bad that they will turn to eventhe public library to get a fix(porn is definately an addiction), then are you sure you want Christ to return right away? HE left us here to be HIS light! DO IT!  As an American, even if you do not live in NYC, call the library and tell them they are making a horrible decision. Flood the phones. Call your own library and find out if you can view porn on the computer. I will bet that you can. Let them know that is not acceptable. Speak the truth in love, don't cuss out your local librarian. IF 82% of men are looking at porn and you are a man who doesn't... stand up and be a light! Men desperately need you! My husband needs you, my son needs you. I can't be a Godly man in their lives but you can be in someones life. Stand up for what you believe in and Don't back down. We are in a won war and we are not called to let the world go to hell in a handbasket! We are meant to be salt and light and to tell others about HIM!!!!!

We need to pray as if it all depends on HIM and then get up and work like it all depends on us. GOD has struck down many Goliaths, don't be afraid!!!

Dearest Jim,

I have raised question about the matter of pornagraphy in two of the Libraries in NYC where I go at my convenience.  The first incident the employee listened and said that it was not allowed, but he was passive about the matter.  The second incident in another library to the employee working gave me the most incredulous answer I have ever heard.  This is a Library for adults , its open at night and there is no section for children.  6 or 7 colleges are near it and it is a research Library for graduates and beyond.  A male was viewing material not appropiate for a Library, and of pronographic in nature.  Anylize that, it has to be defined !  Her response was "its a public library" .  I mentioned taxes, board of Education, Laws against violence to women, promoting degredation of the human race, that the laws of the U.S. was freedom of life not lewdness, violence, or lawslessness.  An american  that I had to sing the Star Spangel banner to .  Strange, I guess because we were adults it was OK - in who's mind.  It was adults who made these laws not children.  I called ACLJ and reported the incident.  When I returned to the Library, there was a change but it is not my job to go after this kind of nonsense.  I am a Christian woman and I spoke up.  I know who I belong to.

Blessed be the Lord God Almighty Jesus Christ.  Amen , Amen, Amen .

I agree that having porn available in public libraries is bad.  But if you ban porn today, what if they ban the Bible tommorrow?  It is hard enough to find decent Christian literature in the public libraries.  Perhaps if we made Christian and holiness literature available to people in church libraries it might be a good positive outreach into our communities.  Be careful what you wish for.  Registered sex offenders are banned from libraries because of the presence of children.  San Bernardino County, CA public libraries do have porn filters-even content on fotf on some issues have been blocked.

Apr 28, 2011 4:11 PM Guest chris4Christ  says in response to LibraryLady:

Dear LibraryLady,

I would like to gently point out that you are wrong about filters. They have been greatly improved to include health research, history and education-and still block out porn.

Yes, you are right, we, as Christians have the responsibility to provide filtering for our own children, and to protect our own and our children's eyes. That isn't the issue. The issue is the safety of public libraries. I can protect my children at home, but I cannot help that I entered a children' section of a public library and discovered a man viewing porn-right next to picture books! I do not think any of us have provided only one side at all. Each of us is outraged by the fact that public libraries have become Adult Bookstores encased w/i a tax paid-for public building.

As for our resonsiblities, I, myself, see it is our responsiblity to  also protect the most vulnerable of our society;children from poverished homes, children from homes with absent parents or single-parent homes with the one parent at work! These are chldren in our communities that have no where to go after school to get their homework done, they do not have access to the internet for research, or even good books to read! These are the children that are at huge risk of being victimized by a library porn viewer. Also, form my very limited research, librarians themselves are constantly intimidated, threatened, even assaulted-for either trying to prevent a guy viewing porn, or just walking out to their car after they clock out!

You suggest that we volunteer? I am extremely sad to say that we let our teen daughter volunteer at our library-no more! Just last night I read about a teen girl who was volunteering at her public library-and was raped in the library's bathroom! There is NO WAY I would allow my children OR myself to volunteer at a public library-not until things change.

Apr 28, 2011 4:52 PM Guest Carl  says:

I, too, disagree with the New York Public Library for allowing its users to look at pornography on the web. But these same libraries carry books that contain sexually explicit material in them; and I'm not talking about the sex-ed or health books. This shouldn't be so surprising. It's still a shame though.

Several years ago I waged a letter war directed at the public library system in my county.  I was so disturbed to find that my 11 year old son could use his library card to rent an R rated movie.  Why is it ok there but in any video store he would have to be 17 years old and in fact would be turned away in any movie theater?   I was unable to get a satisfactory answer from anyone.

This is not news! Ten years ago I visited the library in Nyack New York several time while on a job search. There was a man there every day viewing gay porn, right in the view of staff and other patrons in the room. It was pretty shocking that this was funded by public taxes.

It is sad how they are using the fifth amendment for mostly evil these days instead of good. How come we cant use our freedom of speech to talk about religion as much as we want but instead we have to have pornography and antireligious people shoved down our throats on a daily basis. I am sick to death of it. I am sick of hearing that viewing pornography is normal and everyone does it and I am sick of people getting offended when someone brings religion up. What has this country come to. I pray that a wake up call will happen so we can see the error of our ways.

It is obvious that we should banning pornography of all kinds in any public forum.  I would go so far as to eliminate it in all forms.  The difficult part involves censorship. In some unfortunate cases medical abnormalities are inoperable due to the risk of creating more damage through the removal of the offending tissue. Censorship is the same problem.  If pornography is censored, what is stopping Bibles from being censored, or Billy Graham movies from being censored as having the ability to introduce children to the gospel without their parents consent.  We must pray for wisdom in this area and seek after God’s heart to win people over in love and create a compelling choice – a choice to lay down their corrupt evil ways and invite Jesus to transform their hearts. This will change our country from the inside out.
Apr 29, 2011 9:16 AM Guest jennifer  says:

It is so sad that pornography will be so widely available. The effects of porn are long and deep on the sexual predators and on their victims. Our family has recently had the heartbreak of finding out that our children have been molested by somone who was into internet pornography. The effects from this will surely be a lasting scar that I pray will bring us together and make us stonger as we rely on our heavenly Father above.

As to the idea of censorship I don't believe that censorship is the issue. By filtering pornographic material out the library wouldn't be saying you cann't make pornographic material, it would only be saying that we will not use taxpayer money to provide you with the access to this kind of material.

Regarding censorship concerns:  True censorship occurs when the government prohibits the printing or distribution of material.  That's very different from a public library selecting what it will make available to patrons, including children.  After all, libraries can't possibly house every book ever published -- they must make choices.  In this case, a poor choice was made.

I, too, am appalled and disturbed.  It is very saddening that the one place that you would have thought to be a safe, fun (and educational) place for our children to go to (since there are so few places anymore) is no longer a safe haven.  My mother granted me the freedom to visit my local library as often as I wanted as a child....it was magical to me since it held the key to places far, far away and also incredible powerful words of honor and integrity.  If I was feeling blue, there were plenty of books with heroes to admire and to give encouragement.  This was also the one place I took my children very often just 15-20 yrs ago for the same reason.  They too have become avid readers with great horizons.

I understand and sympathize with the different librarians words and thoughts in that they feel like they are being attacked.  But honestly, this has nothing to do with the employees of the library.  Librarians cannot monitor the patrons non-stop as they are not "policeman" of the library....it would be impossible to put that task and responsibility them.  As a taxpayer, I do not want the possibility of such foul, inappropriate materials in my libraries to be viewed.  Such disgusting behavior should never be permitted in a public place.  It is sad that our "leaders" continue to make excuses for the extremes and make exceptions and tweak laws and rules in their favor.

America is not what it once was...  My hope is in the Lord and I know He is on His throne...but I think He would want us to do the honorable thing and that is fight for what is pure and true and of great integrity.  We should not sit back and say what will be, will be.

Thank you for the information!

My heart is grieved to read this blog.  I am a Librarian serving now at a Private School on a US Territory. But my early roots started in a public library in a small town in Colorado.  But over the years, I have worked in a variety of different libraries. I have seen them evolve and change.  But this change is not a horrible one. Change starts with individuals. If they permit this in New York, they will see in other public libraries around the nation. Tax Payers are going to have to stand up against this and force the issue in order for it to not happen in their communties.

I work in a public library in the Midwest.  We have had patrons view online materials that violate our policy on inappropriate content.  We ask them to please navigate away from the site and if they refuse, we can end their session remotely.  If we continue to have a problem with the patron, we bar them from the library.  We chose not to filter our Internet because we have people coming in to do extensive medical research.  We do have all monitors above the table where anyone walking behind can get a glimpse of the screen, and we also have no computers in isolated areas.  That helps quite a bit.

May 2, 2011 12:16 AM Guest Mary C.  says:

I was hoping that federal obscenity laws would at least be a resource for a fight against this.

The 1973 Supreme Court case Miller v. California, chief justice Warren Berger wrote the opinion of the court when he said, "The basic guidelines for the trier of fact must be: (a) whether 'the  average person, applying contemporary community standards would find  that the work, taken as a whole, appeals to the prurient interest,(having or encouraging and excessive interest in sexual matters. defn. mine) (b)  whether the work depicts or describes, in a patently offensive way,  sexual conduct specifically defined by the applicable state law; and (c)  whether the work, taken as a whole, lacks serious literary, artistic,  political, or scientific value."

That's what is described as the 'Miller Test." Pornographic material at its core passes those 3 easily.

It's the people in authority at the library who are responsible, and should reprimanded for their shameful action. I'm thinking a public outcry from the people of New York city might get their attention. But showing someone the law never changes their heart. But God can! Keep praying for God to intervene in the hearts of His people to make a difference, and watch Him move!

I am a Christian academic librarian and I am appalled at the lack of understanding and reactionary comments regarding this issue. Did any of you take the time to verify this information (besides the librarians)? Is the NYPL really using our tax dollars to provide pornography to the public? You make it sound as if they purchase Penthouse and Hustler for the shelves and pass out flyers advertising free porn. This issue has been debated for more than 10 years. NYPL as well as thousands of libraries across the country have taken steps to deal with the problem of pornography. At the very least, I implore you to read the Policy on Public Use provided by the NYPL as well as some introductory information on the issue.

Librarian257,

I am not in NY, but I have put together a hefty binder, full of various information about my own library(midwest region) and others across the country.

If a library wants E-Funding, they must comply by CIPA-Children Internet Protection Act-and that funding comes from Federal money.

Most libraries use that federal funding AND local governement money. I'm talking millions of dollars.....And they still have computers that supply porn.

In my limited(but well done research) I found only a handful of library systems that have high-level filters on them, and only TWO that refuse to turn those filters off when asked by a patron.

As far as porn in print, there are hundreds of libraries that have Playboy on their shelves-and-unlike viewing porn on the net, this is easily won over, because Playboy (supposedly) has "information" in it-thus becoming a matter of librarians choosing which to include as they purchase information-gleaning materials.

If you want to be further informed on the realities of either conforming to the above policies-or not-I suggest you head over to SafeLibraries.org and read away. Mr. Klienman has quite the collection of shocking, eye-opening information. Many libraries have such policies in place-but simply do not adhere to them-resulting too often in cases like mine and far, FAR worse cases that have resulted in extreme sexual crimes against children and teens.

May 7, 2011 11:21 PM Guest librarian257  says:

Chris,

Thank you for the response. I'm not entirely clear on what you are arguing. This article was referring to the NYPL and they have installed a filter.See their policy for a clear description. I'm also a little confused as to what people are suggesting as an answer to thisproblem. Should libraries not provide Internet access? What about other contentthat may be offensive to a Christian? Should we ask for Muslim literature to beremoved from the library as well? After all, some terrorism has resulted fromextreme Islamic views. Should we also withdraw violent novels from thecollection in case a child finds it on the shelf? Should we remove Nietzschesince he was an atheist? The freedom of information comes to us with some cost.

As for public libraries being unsafe, are they really more unsafe than your public park, museum, or university campus? All of which have been funded by your tax dollars. The truth is that your teenage daughter could be raped in any public restroom and people view porn in the privacy of their own home and travel to places looking for children to violate. I don't mean to be crude. I just want to point out the reality of the situation. As Christians, we often strive to control our environment when we should be focusing on training our children in the ways of the Lord. That is their best protection.

May 10, 2011 9:49 AM Guest Amanda  says in response to librarian257:

Librarian257,

I do not believe that it is a matter of whether the content offends certain religious groups or not. The matter is this: why should anyone have direct access to pornography?

It's a fact that porn destroys lives and marriages. Christians are not against the spread of pornography because they're over-controlling sticks-in-the-mud who try to force the rest of the world into their way of thinking. True Christians are merely looking at the situation with unblinded eyes and seeing it for what it is.

True, if someone really wants to view pornography they're going to find access to it. But does that mean that we should enable them to do so? If a druggy really wants a fix, he's going to descend to the deepest pits to satisfy his lusts. But if we legalized drugs just because we know that laws are not going to stop the desperate, how many more victims would fall prey to the icy grip of drugs because they are more readily accessible?

The point is that if something dangerous is restricted, it will not cause nearly as much damage. If you see a lion roaming the streets you don't rest until it's caged. If idiots want to pet the lion after that, they can do it at their own expense.

May 12, 2011 6:18 AM Guest Brett  says:

Jim,

The story you linked to doesn't say that the library will "be making pornography available to any and all of its patrons" in quite the same way as you make it sound. Not that I'm pleased by the news, but all the story says is that people are free to use the libraries' computers to view porn. That's different from purchasing Playboy to put on the shelf beside Popular Mechanics in the periodicals section.

Also, it's my opinion, but I don't know if it's ever right to start talking about how our society is "going down in ruins." It seems that every generation thinks it's the turning point (which each one can be, negatively or positively) but, people, there's plenty of good happening in the world. Get to it!

May 12, 2011 6:19 AM Guest Brett  says:

I think that a non-sensationalizing approach – i.e., not "THIS IS OUR TIME TO FIGHT OUR SOCIETY" or "HOW IS OUR SOCIETY DOING THIS" or "OH, FOR THE GOLDEN DAYS"– is the most effective. The issue in this article can't necessarily be representative of the entire "society," as it's a decision made by a few people in one location; it can't be used to gauge the so-called level of goodness or morality in our society.

Furthermore, I don't think any change will be made by people crying that the sky is falling.

I'm sorry if my words sound vitriolic or belligerent, I mostly just want to point out what I perceive as pointless, in order for us here to have more clarity and thoughtfulness in what we spend our energy on.

May 12, 2011 9:07 AM Guest Amanda A  says in response to Cathie M.:

You're absolutely right.  I'd never thought about indecent exposure, aka "flashing", and the fact that one can get arrested for that.  It's really the same thing as porn.
