Super Bowl Ad Gets Super-sized Response

Posted by Jim_Daly on Jan 28, 2010 4:42:40 PM

It’s been said, “You can please some of the people some of the time, but you can’t please all of the people all of the time.” That axiom is certainly true as we move closer to the debut of our Pam and Tim Tebow commercial in the Super Bowl. While the spot has yet to air, the overwhelming reaction to our theme of “Celebrate Family, Celebrate Life” has been positive.

I’m not surprised. Tim Tebow’s story is inspiring. Back in 1987, Tim’s mother Pam experienced a number of life-threatening medical problems during her pregnancy and, in turn, was coached by her doctors not to carry the baby to term. Since it was quite possible that her baby wam_new_york_cover.jpgould be stillborn, her physician’s believed Pam shouldn’t take the risk to her own life by going through with her pregnancy.

After listening to their advice, Pam chose to keep her fifth child—and now the world has Tim Tebow. This former Florida quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner is arguably one of the most gifted quarterbacks to emerge on the college scene in recent history. I’d say Pam has given us an inspiring story of personal courage against the odds. After all, she was willing to risk her own life in order to give her son a chance at life.

Who could have an issue with that?

Like I said at the outset, you cannot please all of the people all of the time. There are a number of detractors who are outraged by the decision by CBS to air a spot which celebrates family and life. In fact, I’ve been swamped with interview requests—many from national media outlets like Diane Sawyer on ABC News, Headline News, and FOX’s Special Report with Bret Baier last night—to address both our critics and supporters.

Overall, I’ve been pleased with the civil tone of the debate. We may have to agree to disagree on a given topic, but there’s certainly no need to engage in a shouting match. For instance, I think Bill O’Reilly did a great job earlier this week addressing the concerns of one of the protesters. Yesterday, Rush Limbaugh weighed in on whether CBS should have agreed to air this spot by pointing out some of the flaws in the argument by our detractors.

Even the women on ABC’s THE VIEW took up the topic. Several seemed sympathetic to Tim Tebow’s story and didn’t have a problem with CBS running with the spot. However, there was something said by co-host Joy Behar that I’d like to address for a minute. Here’s Joy’s objection to Tim’s story:

The only argument against any of it is, that, you know, [Tim Tebow] could just as easily become some kind of rapist pedophile. I mean, you don’t know what someone is going to be. So in this case he turned out to be great.

Joy went on to elaborate on her point:

To me it would be like, say, Ted Bundy—who was a serial killer; very good looking—if his mother said in an ad, “I wanted to abort him but somebody talked me out of it!” [audience laughter] I mean it doesn’t make any sense, this ad.

While Joy’s comment got a laugh from the television studio audience, I’m not sure she sees the trouble with such an argument. I did a quick Google search and found that there have been fewer than an estimated 200 to 300 serial killers in the United States since 1970 (depending on the source). The death toll attributed to their grievous actions numbered less than 2,000—which is, no question, a horrific tragedy.

But consider this, too. While 2,000 died at the hands of these criminals, almost 50,000,000 babies have died from abortions performed in the same timeframe. Is Joy really sure she wants to suggest that it’s a good thing Americans have aborted 50 million babies because—mathematically speaking—we might have prevented additional serial killers?

Can you see why that perspective caught my attention? My view is that the best policy is to err on the side of celebrating life. That’s why Focus is thrilled to partner with Tim, his mother, and their story.

I am very proud that Tim Tebow is willing to do this ad for Focus on the Family.  What a great role model for our sons.

Just watched your interview on Fox Newx, Mr. Daly.  I was praying for you already but got VERY fervent in the face of the attacks directed your way by the opposing view guest.  You, as always, kept your cool and were able to reinforce the Christian view of love for all and the freedoms we as Americans enjoy.  Thanks for taking a stand and raising the debate! God Bless You!

Fox News interview:  Well done Jim!  Enjoyed your strength and resolve for life!  I can't wait to see the ad and I'm mailing in a contribution today to help pay for it!  God Bless you and Focus on the Family.

I am so honored to be a partner with Focus on the Family!!!  Thank you for your voice for "LIFE" during the Superbowl!  What a wonderful venue, with an enormous audience, to harken the voice of God!  God's voice is too often muzzled by society!  His most vunerable people; the unnborn, the terminal, the aged, the mentally challenged; need our voices to be heard on their behalf.  They are God's most precious children and He needs us to protect them.  I, again, commend you on promoting Christian values to the world!  I look forward to watching Tim's commercial!  I pray that we can continue to promote life.  If it just changes one person's mind, it is so worth it!  I have been watching your debates on Fox News Channel.  Keep up the Lord's work.

God Bless

Mr. Daly:

I saw the "debate" "interview" on Fox News Friday morning.  Not only did you do a great job representing "life", you did a great job of being a man of kindness and integrity and appropriately representing the King we serve.  I too am greatful the mother of the lady on the opposite side in the interview also chose life for her daughter.  Bless you as you serve.

Jim,

God has you at the helm of FOTF for such a time as this.  I'm both impressed and encouraged how you are handling the good, bad and ugly of this ad.  No brainer here - you know you've got our support in the biggest ways possible.  We're standing with you as "watchmen on the wall".

Mr. Daly,

I saw you face the detractor today on Fox News. You were magnificent. Your calm demeanor and consistent message of hope and life was in sharp contrast to the opposition view of untruthful attack and censorship. Please continue to show that the opposition is about abortion and death; not choice. Please convey my admiration to Tim Tebow and his very brave mother. And, thank you Focus on the Family for standing for life.

Saw Jim this morning on Fox News.  I just wanted to let him know that he came off as credible, humble and non-threatening.  Thanks for being such a great spokes person for the family.  Touch Down!

I just loved your response, to the opposing woman on Fox News, expressing thanks to her mother for not aborting her. Hopefully she'll take some time to ponder the thought of not being alive to debate you on Fox News, if her mother chose to abort her. It's amazing how we, as human beings, can somehow lose sight of the fact that we all were once a fetus. Hence, might I suggest a more specific slogan for the unborn: PRO-FETUS!

In the name of Jesus,

-Bill V.

I also saw your debate on Fox.  I work at a pregnancy center and we are constantly fighting the incorrect info. proaborts put out about us.  I think you missed a great opportunity on national tv to confront this woman on all the lies she was telling about what pregnancy centers do.  We do not do false pregnancy test or false sonosgrams.  Many centers have licensed medical personel and are the only venue women in crisis have to go for the complete truth about their pregnancy.  Bill O'Reilly and Laura Ingraham did a much better job of exposing this woman and her proabort agenda.

God bless you for sponsoring the Superbowl ad and God bless Tim and his mother!

You tube has your interview, Jim, with Jehmu on Fox News. I am so proud to be a sponsor and a friend of Focus today. I am really impressed you showed calmness and level-headedness (is that a word?) when confronted with false accusations. May God continue to bless you and everyone at Focus. Keep up the great work!

I signed up for facebook this week just so I could comment on Tim Tebow's facebook page and encourage him and Focus on the Family for airing the upcoming ad at the SuperBowl on CBS. Abortion is an issue that I have fought since that terrible decision in January, 1973.  My story on abortion began in August, 1972 while taking a break from washing dishes to watch the special broadcasts on TV where men were saying that a woman had a right to abort her baby because it was just a glob of tissue and not a real baby.  Up until then I believed everything on TV, in the newspapers and from our government.  When I returned to washing dishes with my pregnant tummy against the sink I could feel the gentle kicking of my baby.  As an experiment I began to purposely hit the pans against the sink and sure enough my baby kicked, this happened again and again.  The light went on in my head that the people on tv or anyone else saying that a fetus was just a glob of tissue without feelings or responses was wrong.  When those discussions led to the Supreme Court decision of Rov vs. Wade, I lost my innocence of believing in authority figures and depending on the courts or my government to always to the right thing because I knew from the depths of my soul that life begins at conception and that anything you do to a fetus within the womb is the same as you would do it after they are born.  I delivered a beautiful healthy son on February 11, 1973.

"Behold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves.  Therefore be wise as serpents and harmless as doves."  Matthew 10:16

As I read this verse this morning, it made me think of you, Mr. Daly.  I saw your interview on Fox & Friends Jan. 30 about the Tim Tebow ad and was so proud of your strength under control.  As a pastor's wife, I know that you are vulnerable to attack, but you certainly responded with wisdom to the opposing guest.  I loved your closing remark that you were glad her mother had chosen life for her.  How can one argue with that?  May God bless your ministry and thanks for standing up for the family!

I am excited that Focus is presenting the Tebow story during the Super Bowl!  I also have just recently seen the Focus on the Family ad featuring "Fred." (I saw the ad on RFD-TV.)  I am happy to see Focus reaching TV audiences who might not otherwise know of the many resources Focus provides.  Great exposure!  Thank  you!

Sir Daly, just viewed your TV response to Gloria Alred on FOX with Megan Kelly. Very good!  However, one thing I clearly noted that could easily have been included in response to the question "Why show this ad on the SuperBowl?"... I beleive a more direct answer could include, (i.e.)  "the choice that was made led to a talented football player, and the Super Bowl is a game centered around ... FOOTBALL!" ... (therefore making all the more sense, right?)  Just a thought.  In conclusion, yes, let the debate begin & may the power and strentgh of the Spirit of Life be glorified, praise His Name!!!   Thank You, God Bless,   Dan

You were wonderful on Larry King Live!  The so called pro-choice person was very rude ( I could sense the evil there), but you stayed calm and stated your points kindly.  God Bless you and your group for giving those without a voice a chance to live!  God will continue to bless you as you work to save his littlest angels.  Sincerely, Maria
Feb 1, 2010 8:32 PM Guest Dale  says:
thank you Jim Daly, Focus on the Family, the Tebow's and CBS for standing up and speaking the truth.  The pro choice movement wants to make it out to be all about respect for women or accuse pro lifers of the lack thereof.  The women (and their men) that make the decision to abort, many times later in life greatly regret their decision and many of them go through anxiety, depression and other emotional issues for life.  Exactly how is that equated to respect for women?  Abortion is not right anyway you slice it and the pro choice movement is hiding behinmd the "women's rights" line to look suportive of women, when in reality once a woman goes through with an abortion she gives up her right to ever change the fact that she has had an abortion or repair the damage done to her psyche.  The only way to ever attain peace and forgiveness after the fact is through our Lord & Saviour Jesus Christ.

"...Before I was born the Lord called me; from my birth he has made mention of my name" Isaiah 49:1

"...he who formed me in the womb to be his servant..." Isaiah 49:5

I couldn't help but think of these verses as I read about Tim Tebow and his mother. I am so grateful they are willing to be the voice for life. Let us all pray in Jesus' name for the Tebow family, Focus on the Family, CBS, those who will hear the ad, and that God will be glorified through this effort.

The LORD tells us "Be still and know that I am God," in Psa. 46:10.  He spoke volumes, on Larry King Live, through you tonight, Mr. Daly, as you bravely sat and said, "Let's celebrate LIFE."  Yes, let's celebrate every baby the Lord conceives and every baby growing in a mother's womb; because it is He that has made us, each baby is "fearfully, and wonderfully made" Psa. 139.  Mr. Daly's calm strength came from the Holy Spirit.  The N.O.W. representative ignored the issue of the baby's life; and the fallacy of her arguments were evident.  I pray that those who saw LK Live tonight had their eyes opened.  Even more, I pray that pregnant women and not-yet-but-some-day-pregnant women will see the Superbowl Ad and be moved by Mrs. Pam Tebow's choice to carry baby Tim full term.  May Our Gracious Lord inspire pregnant women to see the ad and value the lives of their unborn children -- and to choose LIFE.
Feb 2, 2010 8:28 AM Guest Shelley M  says:

While watching you for the first time Monday night on CNN I was honoured to watch and hear you.   Our family has just lost our new grandchild who was in his mother's womb for 18 weeks.

For three months, mother and father did everything possible to keep this little angel alive.  This was a tragedy for everyone envolved, most especially, for his greiving mom and dad, and though heart-breaking,  we thank God we had the privilege of holding this treasure for a brief time-and the gift to love him forever.

We also thank God that my own mother choose not to take the path abortion would have taken her when she was a 16 year old unmarried girl. 65 years later, I count my blessings every day that I breathe, love and have the incredible experience of life...

I would like to believe that if just one expectant mother could have the ability to hold her 7 or 8 inch baby and see the perfection and beauty in this tiny precious life, she would not be so easily convinced that abortion is her only choice.
