Call of Christian Conscience

Posted by Jim_Daly on Nov 20, 2009 11:14:49 AM

I'm in Washington, D.C. today where I had the honor and privilege to join Chuck Colson, Professor Robby George Capital Building2.jpgand Bishop Harry Jackson, among scores of others, in issuing the Manhattan Declaration: A Call of Christian Conscience.

The unveiling came during a news conference at the National Press Club here in the nation’s capital, but this was a lot more than a photo op. It was a demonstration of solidarity among more than 125 Christians of all denominational stripes that we will not only continue to speak out in the public square, we will continue to stand firm for biblical principles in that public square.

I encourage you to read the entire declaration and consider adding your signature, too, because it really is a beautiful articulation of what we believe and why we believe it, but here’s the crux of the piece:

While the whole scope of Christian moral concern, including a special concern for the poor and vulnerable, claims our attention, we are especially troubled that in our nation today the lives of the unborn, the disabled, and the elderly are severely threatened; that the institution of marriage, already buffeted by promiscuity, infidelity, and divorce, is in jeopardy of being redefined to accommodate fashionable ideologies; that freedom of religion and the rights of conscience are gravely jeopardized by those who would use the instruments of coercion to compel persons of faith to compromise their deepest convictions.

We are Christians who have joined together across historic lines of ecclesial differences to affirm our right and, more importantly, to embrace our obligation to speak and act in defense of these truths, the declaration continues. We pledge to each other, and to our fellow believers, that no power on earth, be it cultural or political, will intimidate us into silence or acquiescence.

There are many equally powerful passages in the document and some incredible honesty and openness, too. In fact, in several places, the Manhattan Declaration is written a little like a conversation.

It acknowledges, for instance, that Christian institutions have "scandalously failed" to uphold the institution of marriage and to model for the world its true meaning; it notes that some people are disposed toward homosexuality and that we must have compassion and respect for them as having "profound, inherent and equal dignity"; it points out that sincere people disagree on whether same-sex marriage is sin; and it admits that many people, including some Christians, see opposing same-sex marriage as a denial of civil rights and then explains with great heart and conviction why we think that is an inaccurate view.

Manhattan Signing.JPG

This is the kind of communication that captures the spirit of our faith. Inviting and answering questions, engaging in civil discourse, acknowledging where we’ve fallen short and investing more energy in doing the right things for others to see. It’s the language of cultural change, what the early church engaged in and that’s why I’m proud to add my name to the list of signers that includes Joni Erickson Tada, Josh McDowell, Dennis Rainey, Ravi Zacharias and, of course, Focus on the Family founder Dr. James Dobson.

I join with them in unequivocally embracing my personal obligation and Focus on the Family's organizational obligation to stand up for these crucial biblical principles. I also embrace my obligation, and Focus', to champion these Christian truths in a Christian manner. Being unyielding in what we believe is critical, but it is no excuse for being unkind in how we express it.

As the Scripture says In Luke 6, "If you love those who love you, what benefit is that to you? But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return, and your reward will be great." The Manhattan Declaration is an excellent example of achieving that balance of Truth and Grace. It is a document that stands for something.

That’s how we should endeavor to act, and strive to be known, as followers of Christ.

Count me as one who will follow my Savior and live by His Word. I support this effort to draw a line in the sand and say not any farther. I will stand up for my faith and my country.

I understand this has to do with the Leaders but what should we as Christians who are not in the Medical Field or in the Pulpit implement this?? What can I do as the average everyday Christian to further this???

I am encouraged by this document! I grew up in Germany at the time of Hitler. I wish the churches in Germany had had the courage and foresight to speak out as the writers of the Manhattan Declaration have done. I also appreciate the clarification Dr. Albert Mohler made in his blog today. He explains that by signing this document together with Catholics and Orthodox Christians, he has not abandoned evangelical theology. Instead, he is making public that he will not bend his knee to Cesar in matters of Life, Marriage and Religious Liberty. See: http://www.albertmohler.com/2009/11/23/why-i-signed-the-manhattan-declaration/

I will stand with resolve and compassion on Biblical principles applied to laws that compliment our Lord's guidance in our country and world.
Nov 23, 2009 10:19 AM Guest Anita  says in response to David F:
As an "ordinary" Christian I can speak out lovingly and firmly for the right to life of the unborn and the unwanted, stand for traditional marriage as the Creator instituted it, and uphold morality in my own life and defend it where it is being assaulted. I can do this with family, friends, and colleagues. I can affirm these rights and liberties in the marketplace, in letters to the editor. I can pray for those who have embraced deception, as well.

I am so angree at this point I don't know how to aim that anger to do the best for my grandchildren, my children, fellow christians, and our Country.  I have signed every petition that I've been in contact with,  vocally stated our view to our politicians, and have called them to say the same.  I will continue to do this until I get called home.  I will "Stand in the Gap" and use the first amendment rights to voice our stand. I will continue to use every peiceful method I know to fight and overcome their adjenda.

How encouraging to know that there are men & women, who will stand up and support the foundational truths of the Bible in regards to marriage and life and family.  Some  Christians in America are choosing  to not render "unto Ceaser what is God's".   How God must take great pleasure in those believers steps of faith.    To God Be The  Glory

I am overjoyed that these Christian leaders have taken the such a bold step to reject the agenda of the Democratic Congress and the Obama Administration.  I will do everything in my power to support this effort.  My hope is that it leads to the repeal of the so-called 'hate crime' law. We must not allow it become tyrannical in its very nature which, I would suggest, is the purpose of the law in the first place.   If they can make us afraid to proclaim the Gospel,  we are where they want us and I refuse to be there.

Nov 23, 2009 9:08 PM Guest Amy  says:

I thoroughly applaud the efforts of so many to declare the protection to all humans, the importance of heterosexual marriages, and the freedom to exercise our Christian faith.  However, I was disappointed with parts of the document.  Some paragraphs rambled and strayed away from the main point.  I fear the lengthy and elaborated presentation of our foundations, while supported by believers, will be missed by those unfamiliar to the tenets.  Also, the Bible verses used were not in quotes, but appeared to be part of the paragraph; I found this to be confusing.

I will sign it and encourage others to do the same; as well as contact my representatives.

Can you tidy it up a little prior to it going public?  Perhaps, let a non-Christian read it and see if the transitions and illuminations appear cumbersome and confusing to one not familiar with this language.

Thanks and God Bless

I heard about this in a radio broadcast today and was truly moved.  I not only signed the Manhattan Declaration, but I am telling all my friends about it, and making it a focus of my prayers.  Society has eroded and wants to destroy the foundations of the freedom to believe and obey our Lord.  Sadly, many people just don't understand that our Christian foundations are what keeps our society strong and balanced.  May God bless everyone who supports this Declaration!

Christians unite against the illogical reasoning coming out of Washington...
join other Christians now!
Nov 24, 2009 8:15 AM Guest Nicholas K-J  says in response to David F:
This is a great document but good question David. For the average Christian, we must know the legacy of our faith, but it is not enough to say Christianity is best...get out there and show that it is. Love, compassion, honesty, service, power, prayer - these are the things to transform people's hearts and society.

Nov 24, 2009 2:04 PM Guest LeRoy  says:

The Manhattan Declaration, which I signed today, declares we will go to jail or lose tax exemptions if necessary in order to be faithful to the gospel against unrighteous (illegal) use of authority. As one who spent time in jail over twenty years ago in defending and saving preborn children and their mothers, I have long awaited a day like this.

I have written to Focus many times in previous years. If we will not even face loss of financial support in order to stand for candidates for office who will uphold the Constitution, do we deceive ourselves in stating (in words) that we would go to jail? If we will not face jail for Christ's Kingdom, do we really think we are part of the martyrs?

This is a new day, and I am hopeful that this coming around full circle will give us the opportunity this time to go in and conquer spiritual enemies by faith, taking the ground God Himself promises.

Nov 24, 2009 5:31 PM Guest Connie  says:

The Manhattan Declaration is so thoughtfully written.  It is filled with wisdom and it courageously and succinctly addresses many very important issues. I am proud of all your efforts.  I support this Declaration 100%.   I hope a great many people will come together, sign and support it also.

I found this document freeing and filled with hope and common sense.   It is like learning that a group of bystanders, who have for so long been bullied and shamed into silence are breaking that silence to come out and truly defend their values and beliefs for the greater good and benefit of all of us.

"We are Christians who have joined together across historic lines of ecclesial differences to affirm our right and, more importantly, to embrace our obligation to speak and act in defense of these truths, the declaration continues. We pledge to each other, and to our fellow believers, that no power on earth, be it cultural or political, will intimidate us into silence or acquiescence."

I proudly stand with you.  I will strive to actively live and defend those beliefs!  I agree with the people who have posted their comments previous to mine -  all great points.  It is a new day, it is a new beginning and it is good.

I am going through a painful separation and knowing that our laws (no-fault divorce) excused and turned a blind eye to adultery, third party interference, and the negative effects it has on all of us, is truly depressing.   I too have written to Focus on the Family (among other organizations) in hopes of  having their support in helping to preserve marriage.  I thought I was going solo in defending marriage but I found out I wasn't and then when this Declaration was announced, it was truly exhilarating.  I have not lost faith and this Declaration fills me with hope.   Your statement:  "It acknowledges, for instance, that Christian institutions have "scandalously failed" to uphold the institution of marriage and to model for the world its true meaning" - I have experienced that first hand.   I remember questioning if perhaps Christians were simply into "feel good" services but not into actively defending their values and beliefs.  I am so relieved to know that the answer is yes, the resolve is to acknowledge and defend.    Congratulations to all your hard work, your efforts are so very appreciated.

Richard, S. - I agree with you totally.

Their are many things that you can do. One of the is simply to vote, get involved in your state Family Policy Council. Go to Focus Family Action web site to find yours. Lobby in your state legislature as a concerned citizen on life, marriage and constitutional issues. Help campaign for conservative candidates or run for office yourself either locally or state wide.

Thank you to all who have responded.   Know that I am truly trying to defend marriages in particular by being proactive.   Please check out the website www.amendtodefend.com  No-fault divorce must be revisited - there are no consequences for infidelity, promiscuity, third party interference, abuse.  Without creating and protecting the sacred boundaries around marital relationships both in our religious institutions and our legal system, easy walk aways are encouraged.   I agree with the Declaration totally, but we need to go further and that is to end no-fault divorce.

Nov 24, 2009 9:33 PM Guest Connie  says in response to mark V:
As Christians we are called up to defend our believes and values.   I have signed the Manhattan Declaration for it all emcopassing wisdom and grace.
Nov 24, 2009 10:11 PM Guest Karen H  says in response to Connie:

I watched the movie Angels in the Outfield tonight and if you remember, everyone at the end stands in support of the pitcher by flapping their "angel wings"....the action sent a strong message to the pitcher...You can do it...and he led his team to victory. We need to be praying that the petition would be record breaking in it's signitures, thus sending a strong message to Washington and our representatives, and with God's help a huge victory would come. We need to forward this petition to everyone we know.

Nov 24, 2009 10:56 PM Guest Michael  says:
To God be the glory!  Let's pray that this gets someone's attention on the "hill".  Count me in and I'm rapidly spreading the word to everyone I know.
Nov 25, 2009 8:39 PM Guest Connie  says in response to Karen H:

Karen, sorry I am not familiar with the movie.   I have informed everyone I can about this historic and truely awesome declaration and petition.   I am trying to get signatures, also, to end no-fault divorce.  A strong definition of marriage and the protection of the sacred marital boundaries created must be defended and protected.  I had this started this petition when I realized how lax our laws are.   The address is www.amendtodefend.com

I thank these brave people for writing a magnificent declaration!

There is so much that the individual Christ based believer has to offer this soiled and troubled land. Each of us has been directed to proclaim the gospel and the love of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ to every one we meet and  work with. No one should be left behind. This means to indiscrimately reach out and fulfill our pupose as we were created to do. And, to live our lives as an example of Christian faith to be a light to those in darkness. There is a great army of common folk being called to service to put man's wisdom as foolishness by the Power of God.

Dec 15, 2009 3:58 PM Guest Claude  says:
As for me and my house, I will serve the Lord.  I have signed the declaration, and I have posted on linkedin.com where I have a very large network of contacts, and also on FaceBook.  I encourage every Christian to take a stand and to make sure we not only sign this declaration, but to also let our voices be heard by our representatives in the senate when it comes to the upcoming healthcare bill which has a provision to fund abortions.  Will we let our tax dollars pay for this?  If enough of us take a stand, we can beat this!!!
